Inaugural Meeting ANR Metabar in Kourou

The METABAR project led by the research unit LECA in Grenoble, and with the research units EcoFoG and EDB, have met for the kick-off meeting in Kourou on January 19th, 2012.
The METABAR project is funded by the French Agence Nationale de la Recherche for a period of four years. DNA next generation sequencing technologies are advancing at a rapid pace, and they offer unique opportunities to make significant progress in biodiversity science.
METABAR aims at implementing such techniques to rapidely gather large, standardized and repeatable biodiversity datasets. The project proposes to combine concepts of metagenomics (cellular DNA of microorganisms) with DNA barcoding (using small pieces of DNA to identify eukaryotic species). These new protocols will be tested in two large-scale experiments, including different environmental conditions (tropical and alpine environments), and for various taxonomic groups (plants, ants, anurans, mammals, and fungi), especially in French Guiana.
