Handbook of Amphibians of French Guiana

French Guiana is one of the world’s hotspots for wildlife. This territory only represents 1% of Amazonia and 15% of mainland France but 137 species of amphibians can be found there. They are all documented in this handbook which helps grasping the scale of the Amazonian biodiversity.

This work follows the lead of the eponymous book published in 2000 by the National Museum of Natural History (MNHN) under the direction of Jean Lescure and Christian Marty. It incorporates the considerable advances in knowledge on the taxonomy, distribution, ecology and conservation of amphibians in French Guiana of the last decades.

The distribution maps are based on more than 22,000 verified data that go beyond the borders of French Guiana. The evolutionary history of species, their relationships and the uncertainties that sometimes still remain about their taxonomy are also brought forward.

This is an exceptional educational work carried out by the authors through high-quality iconography illustrating all the species in their living environment and incorporates new identification tools based on Maël Dewynter’s illustrations.

Funded wtih the support of LabEx CEBA and OFB, this handbook combines scientific content with high quality photographs and illustrations. It stands as an essential resource for naturalists, conservation professionals, students, and anyone passionate about Amazonian wildlife.

A tribute to the incredible diversity of French Guiana and a must-have for anyone committed to understanding and protecting it.
