Ecofog

The Ecology of Guiana Forests (Ecofog) mobilizes resources of AgroParisTech, INRA, CIRAD, CNRS and Université Antilles Guyane on four sites: Kourou agronomy campus, Pôle Universitaire Guyanais in Cayenne, the laboratory of Wood Science of Pariacabo in Kourou, and the Paracou field station near Sinnamary.

Ecofog aims at integrating a range of approaches in ecology and material science to understand the relationships between biodiversity and the functioning of managed and unmanaged forest ecosystems under changing climatic and anthropogenic pressures. EcoFoG also seeks to foster innovation in the valuation of forest resources in French Guiana taking into account the constraints of the humid tropical environment.

Biogeco

The research unit Biodiversité, Gènes et Communautés (BIOGECO) includes resources from INRA and Université Bordeaux 1.

The laboratory’s research is focused on the analysis of mechanisms governing the evolution of biodiversity at different integration levels (communities, species, populations, genes) so as to sustainably manage resources and environments. This research program aims to promote a more integrated analysis of biological diversity, by considering the interactions among species, populations and individuals as causal factors of its evolution.

Herbier de Guyane

Herbier IRD de Guyane was created in 1965, and is one of the oldest biodiversity platform in French Guiana. Since 2009 it has been managed by UMR AMAP.

Its 180 000 plant vouchers with about 6000 species are regularly checked by specialists, and they are an important source of information for biodiversity science and management. This platform is important for the study of the ecosystems of French Guiana, research on the chemistry of natural compounds, and the discovery of new species.

AMAP

The research unit botAnique et bioinforMatique de l’Architecture des Plantes (AMAP) includes resources from Cirad, CNRS, INRA, IRD and Université Montpellier 2 in Montpellier, but also in Cayenne (manager of the herbier IRD de Guyane in Cayenne) and New Caledonia.

Its research is focused on the study of structural botany, plant systematics, modeling and simulation of plant architecture and vegetation. The main goal specifically in French Guiana is to improve botanical knowledge through interactive identification tools of plants, research to better understand the development of woods, and the use of new techniques to study the structure of forest ecosystems .

EDB

The research unit Evolution et Diversité Biologique (EDB) includes resources from CNRS, Paul Sabatier University, and Ecole Nationale pour la Formation en Agronomie in Toulouse. EDB researchers seek to understand the ecological and evolutionary processes that generate and maintain biological diversity of individuals, populations and communities.

The objectives of the unit are to characterize biodiversity, to study the mechanisms of biodiversity changes, to evaluate the role of selection in populations and better understand the process of speciation (evolutionary process by which new species appear). These studies are based on tools of molecular biology and modeling

LEEISA

The research unit Laboratoire Écologie, Environnement, Interactions des systèmes amazoniens (LEEISA), located in Cayenne, is a CNRS, Université de Guyane and Ifremer structure that supports the development of ambitious research projects in French Guiana, through facilities of field research such as the Observatoire-Hommes-Milieux “Oyapock: A Shared River”, the Nouragues ecological research station, the marine ecological site Awala-Yalimapo.

LEEISA is dedicated to promoting innovative research projects in French Guiana.

ICSN

The research unit Institut de Chimie des Substances Naturelles (ICSN) is the chemistry division of CNRS campus in Gif-sur-Yvette. The ICSN develops activities ranging from the discovery of new natural substances in plants or microorganisms, to the research of their mechanisms of action through the synthesis of molecules with promising biological activities.

ICSN seeks among others to develop innovative interdisciplinary approaches for research of natural substances of interest, inspired by biodiversity, chemical ecology, new sources of natural substances, for example resulting from relationships between species organized in a network (plants / insects / microorganisms), and the development of these compounds for medecinal, agricultural, technological purposes.

Institut Pasteur de la Guyane

Institut Pasteur Guyane (IPG), founded in 1940 in Cayenne is a nonprofit private fundation whose mission is to contribute to the prevention and treatment of diseases through public health activities, research and education.

The IPG has four research laboratories (virology, virus-host interactions, parasitology, and immunology of leishmaniasis). The main studies at IPG have concerned the monitoring of dengue virus strains and its interactions with the hosts, studies on the diversity of insect vectors, the evolution of resistance to different strains of Plasmodium in French Guiana.

MIVEGEC

The research unit Maladies Infectieuses et Vecteurs : Écologie, Génétique, Évolution et Contrôle (MIVEGEC) includes resources from IRD, CNRS and Universities of Montpellier 1 and 2.

Its mission is to understand the mechanisms of replication and transmission of infectious agents to better control them. It focuses on strategies and mechanisms of the adaptation and evolution of pathogenic systems. Research also include studies at the ecosystem level, including its physical, biological and socio-economic variables, populations of hosts (vertebrates and invertebrates) and those of pathogens agents (viruses, bacteria, parasites). One of the main themes of the research unit, and in particular team DySMI, relates to the links between biodiversity and infectious diseases, and more generally of the planetary environmental changes, on infectious (emerging) diseases.

EPaT

The team Epidémiologie des Parasitoses Tropicales (EPaT) of Université Antilles-Guyane, Cayenne, is closely linked with the laboratory of parasitology and mycology of the Cayenne Hospital, and the Clinical and Epidemiological Investigation Center of the Caribean and French Guiana. The emergence of new or poorly documented pathogens is determined by socioeconomic, environmental, and ecological factors.

EpaT’s mission is to conduct operational research on parasitic and fungal infections in French Guiana (malaria, leishmaniasis, typanosomiase, Chagas disease, toxoplasmosis), in close connection with Health Centers in French Guiana.

Silva

The Silva Joint Research Unit brings together people from AgroParisTech, INRA, and the Université de Lorraine to conduct multidisciplinary research on wood, trees and forest ecosystems.

It is the result of the merge of the joint research units « Forest Ecology and Ecophysiology » [EEF] and « Laboratory of Wood Forest Resource Studies » [LERFoB] in January 2018. The main scientific goal of the UMR Silva is to develop pure and applied research to answer questions of society, including forest managers, about (1) the role and the future of forest ecosystems in the context of global changes, including climate change, and (2) the future of the timber industry, particularly in the Grand – Est region for which it is of major economic importance.

LC2S

The research unit Laboratoire Caribéen de Sciences Sociales (LC2S) includes resources from Université des Antilles and CNRS in Martinique and Guadeloupe. It was created to pursue research on legal aspects (public law, community law , international law), but has gradually expanded to all social sciences and today it is a space for interdisciplinary research.

Mobilizing resources of history, political science, sociology and anthropology, LC2S aims at contributing to a better understanding the past and present structures of societies in the Caribbean and in the Americas, and has the ambition to being the reference point in the social sciences at Université des Antilles.
